What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

Guinness, or a Purple Velvet (a Guinness and Port concoction)

How Did You Get Into Golf?

When I was a kid, I would carry my dad’s bag at men’s night. Started to mimic swings and hitting balls. Done. Hooked. Lifelong Love affair.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

Taking my game much more seriously. I want to see where I can get my game. The last 2 season’s have been very good; however I know there is more.

I am also becoming much more interested in growing the game, and what role I can play in that.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

Honestly, I like them all. I enjoy and respect the opinions and thoughts of the #golfchatters

Favorite Golf Quote?

Wow. There are many; however these two somehow resonated from when I was a youngster;

“I always like to see a person stand up to a golf ball as though he were perfectly at home in its presence.” (Bobby Jones)

“Few games show the character of a person more than does that of golf.”

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

Hawaii. I love the islands and the courses are superb with lots of variation to offer.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

Believe the doom, gloom and demise of the game is greatly exaggerated. Sure there are and will be courses that close and this is incredibly sad – on a local or regional basis it might just be the correction of having too much golf per capita.

I feel golf is in a transition state and unfortunately feeling a bit of the pain of being late to and not spending enough time understanding how to address the new golf audience. Tradition and long held ideas are being challenged.

Alternatives that alleviate the time and monetary cost of playing will be a growing fixture in the future. If anything this could impact full courses somewhat; however I doubt it will have a lasting effect – as the young grow up and get older, they’ll be more inclined to play the courses they don’t have the time or the patience to play today.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

@zebwelborn @aspittle @dawnmannix @jordanwenck @1beardedgolfer @oneputtblunder @golfunfiltered @practicalgolf …

Yeah pretty much everyone is great. 🙂

Still pretty new ’round these parts and I like how engaging, and welcoming, everyone is.

There are some pretty sharp wits amongst the #golfchatters

Favorite Golfers and Why?

So many right now. Can’t say I have a ‘favorite’. I like and cheer for anyone out there pursuing their dream of playing – no matter the circuit really.

I do like those that are really pushing the game and the limits; however am a sucker for the underdog story and the ‘didn’t see that coming…’ on a Sunday.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

I’m always looking for a smooth Scotch (like a good Highland Park) or whiskey (like Penderyn from Wales), but too often get sucked into a Fireball-a-thon that usually ends in pouring shots into friends’ mouths from the balcony of whatever hotel happens to be hosting us.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

I started knocking it around with high school friends in the little town of Lindsay, Calif., but got serious when I went to work for the newspaper in Las Vegas and lived around the corner from an all-night driving range where I could hit balls for hours after getting off work at 2 a.m. Then my friend (and no Golf Connections podcast cohort) Mitch Laurance got me into playing 100-year-old hickory clubs about five years ago, and I’ve never looked back — I have about 100 clubs in my collection and have taken the hickories everywhere from Scotland to Hawaii with points in between.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

I most like to hear about the places #GolfChatters have played and loved — or places that are on their bucket lists. I’ve been lucky to experience some incredible golf courses, but I’m always looking for more to put on my own list of someday must-plays. I’m also big on golf being “fun” and I think too many amateur players beat themselves up from the wrong sets of tees, which sucks the fun out of the game. So I’m always advocating playing from a shorter set of tees — some of the most fun I’ve had has been playing from 5,500-5,800 yards.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“I don’t care if you putt from the rough,” Matt Damon says in “Good Will Hunting.” I’m also a big fan of the phrase Haggis Bag, but I’m not sure how that applies here : )

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

I’ve had the good fortune to play both the Old Course and Cypress Point — and I’d go back to either in a heartbeat. But my favorite course for pure enjoyment is Tobacco Road in North Carolina because it fosters such creativity from the mind of the late Mike Strantz. That said, if we’re talking full-fledged destinations, Bandon Dunes on the Oregon coast has to be No. 1 with a bullet. And Nebraska — with multiple days at The Prairie Club included — runs a close second.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

I’m bullish on the industry, obviously; otherwise I wouldn’t be going to work later this year on the new Pacific Gales resort course in Oregon south of Bandon Dunes. But I think golf needs to work on multiple tracks to grow — High-end bucket-listers that hardcore golfers aspire to play; Interesting and affordable local courses where you can play in four hours or so; Short courses where people new to the game can learn in a pressure-free environment. On a single trip to Scotland, you can run the gamut of these philosophies — and if they’ve been doing it successfully there for years, we can certainly duplicate it here in America.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

Well, I know @zebwelbon, @aspittle, @golfbybryan and @tonyjdear from beyond #GolfChat, so you can’t go wrong with any of them as friends. And everyone who loves the history of the game should be following my buddy @MitchLaurance (and listening to his Golf Connections podcast, on which I’m the producer). As for others, @seanmrivers knows more about Montana than any golfer should, but I don’t hold that against him. And I’m still part of the army of #GolfChatters who are trying to help @ReGripped find his way onto Cypress Point despite the fact that I’ve never actually met him in person.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

I’ll watch Phil Mickelson anytime he’s in the hunt. After that, I care more about the drama of a golf tournament and love to see players like Jordan, Rory and Rickie battling it out. I also love Kevin Na and think he’s gotten one of the worst raps of all-time on the PGA Tour for slow play. I’ve seen Jason Day play five-hour rounds and nobody says a word, but if Kevin Na did that, he’d be a poster boy once again because most people simply don’t like to watch his struggles. I think he’s an external exemplification of the internal struggle each of us has when we step over the golf ball.

February 2016 Surprise #GolfChat | @JimmyF1985 aka @tgrgolftraveler

Surprise #GolfChat Week

During our last #GolfChat we had some #GolfChatters complaining that they hated surprises and therefore hated surprise #GolfChat so I ran a poll to determine the consensus of our fellow #GolfChatters.

Here are the results:

Surprise #GolfChat Zeb Welborn

Eighty-two percent of those who voted said they love #GolfChat surprises, so for those of you that hate it, I’m sorry but majority rules.

Also, I do like to get questions from Periscope from #GolfChatters who don’t normally ask questions so, although I’m inviting you to ask questions on Periscope, it’s not necessary to participate.  It only helps make our #GolfChat questions a bigger surprise.

If you want to submit surprise questions for Tuesday’s #GolfChat, make sure you look me up on Periscope around 4:30pm to get in your #GolfChat questions.

Should We Add a Second Hour to #GolfChat?

One problem with only having #GolfChat at 5pm PST is that not everyone can participate . . . especially our European friends as #GolfChat takes place in the middle of the night.

In our #GolfChat survey at the end of last year, there were several requests to have another #GolfChat at another time.

To accomodate those who can’t make it at 5pm PST, we’re considering having another #GolfChat at 10am PST on Tuesdays.  My intention is to pose the same questions in each #GolfChat.

Look for our poll at the beginning of #GolfChat to determine whether or not to add a 2nd hour to #GolfChat.

Turns out I will be attending the Golf Industry Show in San Diego during February as I’ve recently aligned myself with REALiTEE GOLF.  As #GolfChatters, I respect you greatly and would value your thoughts on REALiTEE GOLF.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

Depends on the day. I like craft beer and will sample some of that if the course has it. If it’s a warm day I may go with a Transfusion. That’s one part Vodka, one part ginger ale, and one part grape juice. Preferably with crushed ice and a lime wedge. Grape juice seems to only be available at golf courses!

How Did You Get Into Golf?

My grandfather started me in the game. I was nine years old and spending my summers in New Hampshire. He likes to say it was to keep me out of trouble! I have played ever since.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

Well I played high school golf for four years and college golf for a semester and a half. After my college playing experience went South I lost the passion for the game. I snapped out of that after about 6 months. Now I have embarked on a quest to play the Top 100 courses in America (4 lists). You can check out course tours and my other random thoughts on my blog at tigergolftraveler.com.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

Anything related to golf travel of course. I also enjoy items affecting amateurs just like @1beardedgolfer! There is such a wealth of opinions in #golfchat and I really enjoy seeing them.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“What other people may find in poetry or art museums, I find in the flight of a good drive.” – Arnold Palmer

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

As far as places I have been I would have to say either Pebble Beach or Pinehurst. The variety is so good. Now where I want to go, Scotland and Ireland!

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

I think it’s demise is greatly exaggerated. Sure, there has been a market correction because we built waaaayyy to many courses. I think once that stabilizes things will be good. I always seem to see a lot of people playing. However, the more efforts courses can make to offer alternatives to full 18 hole rounds the better. Some money for 6 holes is better than none at all.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

Jim @TheGratefulGolfer is so positive that it is infectious. He came to my blog early and I am very grateful for that.

Dave @1beardedgolfer is always quick with an opinion and has great stuff to offer the chat and on his website.

Darin @GetawaysGolf adds a lot to the conversation and has some stunning pictures on Twitter and Instagram!

Also @golfismental for his travel stories, @36aday for many reasons, and @ReGripped for his Cypress quest.

There really are too many to name!

Favorite Golfers and Why?

Tiger Woods – I was 12 when he won the 1997 Masters. He is and always will be the best to me. I hope he can have a late career turnaround. For all the Jack loyalists, this is not meant as a dig.

Jordan Spieth – What’s not to like?

Rickie Fowler – Not a huge guy, but plays like he is. Fun to watch and love his attitude. Seems genuinely like a good guy.

Many others, I dislike very few and like a lot.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

Give me an Arnold Palmer, with homemade lemonade and iced tea so sweet it makes your teeth hurt.

If you’re toasting (or roasting) me, you should probably do it with an Old-Fashioned in your hand.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

My baseball career ended at my high school graduation, so I needed something to do. My brother’s J.C. Snead Northwestern clubs were holding up the corner of the garage, so I gave golf a try. Coincidentally, that was the summer of 1997, right about the time Tiger Woods was making golf look really fun. A few orange wiffle balls later, I was hooked pretty quickly and deeply.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I write a golf blog at OneBeardedGolfer.com to chronicle my adventures; it helps get the crazy out of the system.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

I could go for weeks like a lunatic about the USGA’s ruling on solo rounds. There’s plenty of real media covering professional golf, so I get juiced on stuff affecting amateur players, both casual and serious.

Favorite Golf Quote?

Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle – origin unknown, but probably a fuzzy-faced Scot.

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

Kapalua is a truly special place, and I had the experience of a lifetime at Harbour Town, but I’ve probably had the most fun on the Alabama RTJ Trail.

This year I got to play a PGA Tour (Lakes at Grand National a week after the tournament) and LPGA Tour (Senator at Capitol Hill three weeks before the tournament) host course in near tournament conditions. THAT was truly fun.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

I think golf is okay (http://wp.me/P4bZVl-rn for a longer version of my thoughts). The “Tiger Woods” effect caused an industry-wide bubble, which meant a lot of pain for stakeholders as we got back to normal. The game may be lost on “millennials,” but I see a lot of young kids at the golf course. Medium and long term, I think the game is fine.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

Jim @TheGratefulGolfer was my first regular blog reader, and I’ve enjoyed his writing & comments since then.

Steve @dressergolf always has good & witty insights that I value from an instructor’s and professional’s point of view.

And I think Kelly @h2cgolf may be my curmudgeonly kindred spirit that always seems to illicit a chuckle.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

I love watching Zach Johnson play: he’s a shortish hitter & technician that absolutely grinds to get the most out of his game, and uses short-game magic when that’s not enough.

And I’m a homer for all the Kentucky guys (JB Holmes, Josh Teater, Justin Thomas, Russ Cochran (Jr. & III), Steve Flesch, Kenny Perry).

2015 #GolfChat Survey and Awards | @DaveHeald

#GolfChat Survey

Thank you to everyone who participated in #GolfChat this year.  When I started #GolfChat in January, 2015, I had no idea what to expect.  I’ve had a blast running and participating in #GolfChat.

Since #GolfChat questions come from you, I thought it only right to make the direction of #GolfChat up to you too.

I’d love to see #GolfChat expand in 2016 to make an even larger impact in the golf industry and want your ideas on how we can make that happen.  I’d also like to recognize your favorite #GolfChatters with our first ever #GolfChat Awards . . . which I thought would be a fun way to recognize those of you who participate in #GolfChat.

Lastly, I also thought my website might be a good place to build commentary surrounding growing golf and wondered if some of you might want to be contributors to the 19th Hole Media website.

I’ll be looking for contributors in two different areas:

  1. Growing Golf – If you have ideas on how to grow golf we’d love to include you as one of the contributors to the 19th Hole Media website. We are working on a style guide for our contributors page.  We want to make sure the articles related to growing golf are relevant, accurate, well-written and appropriate for our audience. Each article will display the author and a short bio. Please answer yes to our become a 19th Hole Media contributor in our survey and leave your email address if you’re interested.
  2. 19th Hole Media Stories – A 19th Hole Story is a story you like to tell at the 19th hole.  If you have a 19th Hole Story you’d like to share, please answer yes to the question on wanting to share your 19th Hole Story.

Bridgestone Golf

As you all know, the Bridgestone Golf Team has been participating in #GolfChat for the past few months.  I sent them a few copies of my book, The Social Golf Course and in return they asked me to take their golf ball fitting (http://www.bridgestonegolf.com/product/ball-fitting).

After finishing the Bridgestone Golf Ball fitting, they sent me this nice care package in time for the Holidays including my fitted golf ball and a couple of Bridgestone Golf Hats (gave one to my Dad, who told me he only plays Bridgestone by the way).

Thank you to the Bridgestone Golf Team. We’re looking for more opportunities to work together in 2016 for our fellow #GolfChatters.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

I enjoy a cold beer in golf season and a Crown Royal on ice in the off season.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

My Dad used to take me fishing every Sunday morning. The only thing I ever caught was a cold so one day on the way home I asked if we could go golfing instead. I have never picked up a fishing rod since.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I am a Certified Professional Golf Instructor through C.G.T.F. and work at East Park Golf Gardens in London, Ontario as their Pro and Clubhouse Manager. For the last 3 years I have also written a weekly column during golf season for a local newspaper, The Londoner” called “Let’s Talk Golf”. Mostly tips and instruction with the odd opinion piece.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

Speeding up the Pace of Play. I believe it should be taught to all as a important part of Etiquette. I believe that most people who play too slow are not fully aware of the impact they are having on those who play behind them.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“Swing your Swing” (Arnold Palmer)

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

In Canada there can be no finer golf experience that the Banff Springs in Alberta. Last spring I also had the pleasure of playing Kauai Lagoons. Very different golf experiences but both breath taking and worth a trip.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

I know that the catch phrase these days is “Grow the Game” but I can’t help but wonder of we don’t need to pull back a little and consolidate our strong base. Golf grew at unsustainable rates for about 20 years and now we seem desperate to try and maintain that momentum. Golf is a great game and will always be here. I have to admit that I am not a fan of the non traditional offerings we are seeing like Fling Golf and Foot Golf. They look like fun activities but please don’t be fooled into thinking they are golf. In my opinion, they are simply ways for desperate owners to fill tee times.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

I enjoy reading and participating with all who come on Tuesday evenings for #golfchat.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

I do like a lot about some of the new breed in today’s game like Rory, Jordan and Jason but there is only one and never will there be another Jack Nicklaus.

Golf Chatter Bio: @onerandomaussie

Real Name: Tiffany Chaisson
Location: I am Australian but my home is PEI Canada but only six months of the year. The rest of the time I am golfing and eating my way around the world.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

My 20-30 ingredient smoothie.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

In August 2013, I played my first round at Belfast Highland Greens, in PEI Canada. I shot 118 on this nine hole course, had no idea how to hold a club but could connect nearly every time.

In June 2014 I shot an even 100 at Eagles View (9 hole track), bought a set of clubs at a yard sale and started hitting hundreds of balls at the range of the golf resort where I worked. I was shown how to hold a club by a member, (I am a fingers interlocked girl) and I returned to Eagles View the following week and shot a 64.

36 strokes knowing just how to hold a club – I was in. I love it, am totally addicted and since then have golfed a lot.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I want everyone to love golf as much as I do. I am golfing and eating my way around the world, have started a website, a YouTube channel and since July 2014 I have golfed at 44 courses in 4 countries only 34,000+ to go.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

I was very happy to discover #golfchat and a bunch of fellow enthusiasts but I am very new to golf and while I am learning things constantly, am too new to get fired up about particular golf topics.

Favorite Golf Quote?

I completely agree with Ben Hogan – “The only thing a golfer needs is more daylight”. I am of the belief that everyday is a good day for golf, some days are just better.

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

I love everywhere I have golfed and will be returning to all countries I have already golfed in, but PEI, Canada is one of my favourite places to golf in the world.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

While new to golf, I think golf needs to reinvent itself around the world. Most of the places I have visited are losing members with the emergence of more social golfers who like to play different courses rather than the same one each week. I have spoken with a lot of courses and I think that changing competition structures and adjusting course access to attract all ages of golfers would help. Not all of us can give four hours on a saturday to play a comp but still want to play competitive golf and could work golf into their schedule if some different formats were offered.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

Zeb, Jeremy, Mike, CenCalHack, Amy, Cassie, Ryan are always good for a golf chat.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

Last year, just after I started playing, I had the pleasure of watching Jordan Spieth putt out and win the Australian Open so he is a bit of a favourite. I also really like Mickelson. I love his adaptability and like to think I play like him – getting myself out of the crap I’ve just put myself in.

Today’s #GolfChat Bio is from @rickyleepotts.  Ricky doesn’t jump into #GolfChat too often but does promote #GolfChat in his Google+ GOLF Community and chimes into #GolfChat discussions when he can.  He also creates a new #GolfChat graphic each week like this one.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

I pretty much drink craft beer exclusively. Of course, I like vodka, rum, whiskey and gin, too. Pretty much anything wet is good with me. Cheers!

How Did You Get Into Golf?

I started playing when I was young, but didn’t really care about the game until I was introduced to Tiger Woods. He changed the game for me. Matter of fact, he changed my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Tiger.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I work for Troon, the largest golf course management company in the world. I also own the Google+ GOLF Community trying to grow the game one status update after another. Every Friday I host the Friday Foursome, a Google+ Hangout On Air with brands worldwide. Oh, and I play a lot of golf, too. Why? I mean… It IS the greatest game ever played, after all.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

All of them. Nothing trumps another.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“You can always become better.” – Tiger Woods

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

It used to be Scottsdale. Now I live here. So I guess my back yard!

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

It is growing in my world. I would play 5 days a week if I could.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

Zeb… I mean, he did come up with the idea and makes #GolfChat a reality every week. I am grateful he lets me share the questions with the Google+ GOLF Community.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

Tiger. There aren’t enough hours in the day to even begin to explain what he means to me. He is the only reason I started caring about golf and I won’t be able to die happy until I have 20 minutes with the man.

#GolfChat Questions – Happy Gilmore Swings

This weeks #GolfChat Bio is the man who came up with the idea for the #GolfChat Bio . . . Jeremy White, aka @connectgolf.  Be sure to check out his #GolfChat Bio this week and tell him what you really think of his tweets.

#Q1: What was the most interesting thing to happen in golf this week?

#Q2 submitted by @todd_fitness: If you were a sponsor for John Peterson do you think about dropping him? #GolfChat

#Q3 submitted by @1beardedgolfer: Would you watch a Pro-Am event that paired Pros with Juniors or Collegians? #GolfChat

#Q4 submitted by @golfizit:  What will you do this winter to stay sharp? #GolfChat

Golf Chatter Bio: @connectgolf

Real Name: Jeremy White
Location: Sydney, Australia

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

It’s 10 AM in Sydney when #golfchat rolls around, so I have a coffee and look forward to 7:30 PM when the kids go to bed. At that time I will usually have a red wine. I am partial to vodka, lime and sodas and pretty much any cocktail with ginger beer (ginger ale I believe the Northern Hemispherians call it). Moscow Mules (vodka, ginger beer, crushed mint) are a favourite. Dark & Stormys (rum, ginger beer) are good too.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

I grew up next to a golf course. They had kids’ lessons for $1.50. I’d walk the dogs along the fence and pick up balls. I had a mate who trained his dog to retrieve golf balls, so when we were feeling cheeky, we’d hide in the forest alongside the 18th fairway at about 200 and let the dog loose when someone drove it down the middle. They eventually caught us.

When you’re exposed to golf as a child, it never really leaves you, even with the usual distractions of a teenager or twenty-something. You always come back.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I’m building an app for social (recreational) golfers. A lot of effort goes into running social golf events or trips, so the app is designed to make it more efficient. It also has course discovery, live scoring and leaderboards and chat.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

I like talking about rules (particularly the stupid ones), handicapping systems, junior initiatives, golf-tech, drinking, Jason Day and making dad jokes.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“Drive for show. Putt for dough.” – Dad (he claimed it, but most likely stole it from someone else and forgot – ironically he’s one of the worst putters in history)

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

Tasmania – an island state on the SE tip of Australia. It has the two best public courses in the country at a place called Barnbougle. It is Australia’s version of Bandon and in fact one of the courses was designed by Tom Doak (my favourite course designer) – it is ranked #11 in the world (Golf Digest). The other was designed by Bill Coore and is ranked #24 or something. Bucket list stuff. I’m heading there later this month (Nov 2015) for the second time. Fricking excited!

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

I get a bit feisty when people talk about slow play and similar irrelevant issues being the cause of golf’s perceived ills. Yes, slow play sucks, but it doesn’t stop people playing. I could go on, but in the interests of space, if anyone wants to read a blog I wrote about it, here it is: http://connectgolf.com/blog/slow-play-is-not-the-enemy

If Golf Inc. can get past the slow play distractions, there are significant opportunities to better engage the 50 million or so social golfers in the world. Golf is time-consuming and people are time poor, so the game has become less accessible for that reason. Social golfers simply need more flexibility in the game to be able to play it more often. Again I wrote a blog about that too: http://connectgolf.com/blog/social-golf-is-a-sleeping-giant

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

I like the fun banter in #golfchat so if you’re into that sort of thing:

@golfblogger
@regripped
@aspittle
@front9back9
@citizencage
@cencalhack
@golfunfiltered and of course Mr. #Golfchat himself
@zebwelborn

Favorite Golfers and Why?

Jason Day – a great kid with a good story, plus he’s an Aussie
Jordan Speith – keeps beating Day, but is impossible not to like – needs to embrace impending baldness and shave his head
Rory McIlroy – prodigious talent – has it all, but what interests me is can he motivate himself to stay at the top
Zach Johnson – what that guy can do with a wedge is ridiculous

Surprise #GolfChat Questions

#GolfChat

#GolfChat

This week our #GolfChat Questions will be a surprise. Invite golf enthusiasts to show up at 5pm PST on Tuesday, Oct. 20 to join the #GolfChat conversation.

Last week I apparently forget to send out the #GolfChat newsletter so this week, you get two for the price of one.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

Not picky (is that bad or good?), at home it tends to be wine to go with dinner and GolfChat. I enjoy a good mixed beverage when out and if it’s a foo-foo drink then so be it. Sometimes a man just needs a Pina.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

Xmas break of my freshman year of high school is the first time I touched a club. My aunt sensing my boredom and pent up energy and not wanting to strangle me, decided to take me to the course down the hill from our house.

http://golfeatoncanyongc.com/

I played everyday all day over the break and then everyday after school. When tryouts for spring sports came, I went out for baseball. The coach insisted that freshman could only play on their own team regardless of ability. Stupid I thought, and tried out for the golf team. The golf coach played the best players and by the end of the season I had earned a varsity letter. I have been addicted to golf since that time.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

Nothing professionally, I have another business. I do work with a few youths whom just love the game and/or are on teams where the “coach” is just a glorified van driver/chaperone. I learned how a team should be run when one of my teammates returned after his first year at Oklahoma State Univ and passed on what he had learned.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

Favorite topics are the ones that pit old school decorum and values against the inevitable change and ideas of youth. The passion for the game is evident regardless of people’s positions on the topics.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“So I Got That Goin’ For Me, Which is Nice” — Carl

“Why don’t you hit the second one first?” — my friend typically after I drop/retee and stripe the second ball — thanks pal

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

Flying- the British Isles, love links golf

Driving- we have some great courses close by on the Central Cal coast. La Purisima, which if in a different locale could be a top 100 course. Hunter Ranch in the Paso Robles wine country. Morro Bay, my personal fav, based upon the ocean views and muni by the sea atmosphere. There are roughly a dozen other courses in the region of varying quality, difficulty and cost. The best part is the lack of typical vacation crowds.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

Solid for those of us whom are players. Most of the desperate cries for growth are either developers and/or manufacturers. They wont admit it, but many have overcommitted and if the growth slows they stand to lose substantially. (How’s this for a hot button topic?)

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

All those with a passion for the game (PC answer)
Zeb of course (kissup answer)

People with a sense of humor and that share pics of their local courses that they play.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

The Big3, no wait, the Fantastic4, no wait, what about Inbee and Lydia and Lexi, lets make it the Magnificent7, no wait….

Golf Chatter Bio: @todd_fitness

Real Name: Todd Marsh
Location: Syracuse, New York

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

Bloody Mary’s or Martini’s unless it is really hot out then it is Yuengling.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

As a kid I was always with my Father. He started me playing a few holes when I was 4, then give me a dollar and I would run back to the clubhouse and get a soda. By the age of 8 all I wanted to do was play golf.

My father turned 89 this August, he plays everyday unless there is snow on the ground or it isn’t raining. Shoots below his age every round, though from the senior tees.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

This year I started Todd Marsh Fitness and earned my TPI fitness certification. I train local golfers and want to take golf performance training to the internet by offering an e-course. There are some excellent golf fitness professionals offering services on the internet, but I think they are either to technical or to generic. I want to produce a program that is simple to understand, can be adapted to each person’s limitations, and updated frequently unlike programs that are bought on DVDs. I want to help people improve their mobility, not only for golf, but for everyday life.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

Oh there are so many…slow play, the media wanting new rivalries every other week, footgolf, 12-hole courses to name a few.

Favorite Golf Quote?

I have three. “Hit the shot you know you can hit, not the one you think you should.” Dr. Bob Rotella
“Golf is the closet game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots; but you have to play the ball where it lies” Bobby Jones
“Golf is not a game of good shots. It’s a game of bad shots” Ben Hogan

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

I haven’t found that course yet, but I haven’t played too many of the great courses. I will play anywhere from manicured masterpieces to pastures. It is all about the people you are with and the shot making for me. Although if a course has more than 2 blind shots on it, I will never suggest going back.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

I’m not going to say it is in bad shape. Courses need to be more strict with speed of play. But that said, most people have no problem watching a football game. Today we started at 12:50 just before kick-off and our foursome played 18 and was in the bar in time to watch the last 2-minutes of that game.
We need more junior programs, that include some golf but also incorporate movement, fun fitness, etiquette, and respect into the program.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

First I like everyone that participates in #GolfChat. Love to hear everyone’s view. Since you asked me who people should follow I would say these people for various reasons and in no particular order: @MarkKagaoan @JustinRayGC @citizencage @captdave69 @courtgolf @OracleRio @h2cgolf @texasgolfergirl @TwoInchesShort @NoLayingUp @AshleyKMayo @TheGolferBabe @JohnGrahamGolf @practicalgolf @DawnMannix @EllingYelling @Amanda_Balionis @TheGolfChick @Megangolfpro @RPFitnessLAB @Front9Back9

Favorite Golfers and Why?

I’m pretty loyal, I mean I am still a Bills & Mets fan, so I like Tiger. He has raised the level of competition at the pro level and no one will come close to his 26% win percentage or his beating the field’s average score for 89 consecutive rounds. I would like to see him play better, as well as be a better person. I like to watch DJ and Adam Scott’s swings. I will always root for Rickie Fowler, Steve Stricker, or Matt Kucher.
